# Upsell

Offer customers one more competition in a popup on the checkout page, so they can add extra tickets in a single tap before they pay.

***

An upsell is a quick extra offer made to a customer just before they pay. On your site, it appears as a popup on the **checkout page** showing one of your other competitions. The customer can pick a number of tickets and add them to their order with one tap, without leaving checkout.

It is one of the easiest ways to increase the value of each order, because the customer is already in a buying mood and their payment details are moments away.

### What the customer sees

A moment after the checkout page opens, the popup appears over the page. It shows:

* The competition's **Featured Image**.
* The ticket **price**. If the competition is on sale, the original price is shown crossed out next to the sale price.
* The competition **title**.
* A row of **Tickets** buttons so the customer can choose how many to add. By default these are **1**, **3**, **10** and **25**, with **3** selected.
* A **Nevermind** button, which closes the popup.
* A button showing the quantity and cost, for example **Get x3 - £4.50**. Clicking it adds the tickets to the basket and closes the popup.

When the customer adds tickets, the checkout updates straight away to include them, so they can carry on and pay for everything together.

A few competition settings change what appears in the popup:

* **Ticket bundles.** If the competition uses the **Bundles** promotion, the popup shows up to four bundle options (for example "Buy 5 get 1 Free!") in place of the number buttons. See [Promos and Discounts](/marketing/website-tools/promos-and-discounts.md).
* **Custom ticket quantities.** If you have set your own **Custom Ticket Range Options** in the **Ticket Quantities** panel of the competition's **Optional Extras**, those quantities are shown instead of 1, 3, 10 and 25. The quantity you chose in **Default Selected Quantity** is the one selected when the popup opens (or the lowest quantity if you did not choose one).
* **Ticket limits.** If the competition is limited to one ticket per customer, only **1** is offered. If it has a maximum per order, any button above that limit is removed and the maximum itself is offered as a button instead.
* **Entry question.** If the competition has an entry question, the customer chooses an answer in the popup before they can add their tickets. See [Entry Questions](/create-your-first-raffle/create-a-competition/entry-questions.md).

The customer can also close the popup by pressing **Esc** on their keyboard or by clicking anywhere outside it.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the customer cannot add the tickets (for example, they have already reached the maximum number of tickets allowed for that competition), the popup closes and a message explains why. Their existing basket is not affected.
{% endhint %}

### Choose which competitions can be offered

You decide which competitions are allowed to appear as an upsell by switching on the **Upsell** toggle on each one.

1. In the **admin panel**, find the **Competitions** group in the left-hand menu and click **Competitions**.
2. Click the competition you want to offer as an upsell to open it.
3. Scroll down past the main details (title, description, prices, ticket limits and dates) to the block of toggles.
4. Find **Upsell**. Underneath it you will see the helper text "This product will display on checkout as an upsell."
5. Switch **Upsell** on.
6. Click **Save changes** at the bottom of the page.

To stop a competition being offered, open it again, switch **Upsell** off and save.

{% hint style="info" %}
The **Upsell** toggle sits in the same block as **Add To Slider**, **Entry list**, **Auto draw** and **Active**. If you cannot find it, the [Create a Competition](/create-your-first-raffle/create-a-competition.md) page shows where this block sits in the form.

### How the competition is chosen

You can switch on **Upsell** for as many competitions as you like, but customers only ever see **one** popup, showing **one** competition. Your site picks it automatically when the checkout page opens:

1. It looks at every competition with **Upsell** switched on that customers can currently enter. That means it is active, has opened for entries, has not ended, has not sold out, and is not a [Hidden / VIP Competition](/create-your-first-raffle/hidden-vip-competitions.md).
2. It leaves out any competition the customer already has in their basket.
3. From what is left, it chooses the competition with the **latest end date** (the one running furthest into the future).
4. It checks that competition still has tickets available. If it does, the popup is shown.

After the checkout page has opened and the popup has had its chance to appear, it will not appear again in that customer's browser for a few minutes. This stops it popping up every time they move between the basket and the checkout.

Not seeing the upsell you expected, or not seeing one at all? The [Why an Upsell Is Not Showing](/marketing/website-tools/upsell/why-an-upsell-isnt-showing.md) page explains each reason in detail and gives a quick checklist to work through.

### Tips for getting the most from upsells

* **Pick a crowd pleaser.** Upsells work best with a competition that has broad appeal and a low ticket price, so adding a few tickets feels like an easy yes.
* **Keep it simple.** If you want full control over which competition is offered, switch **Upsell** on for just one competition at a time.
* **Think about end dates.** When several competitions have **Upsell** switched on, the one ending last is always chosen first. If your preferred upsell ends sooner than the others, switch the others off.
* **Use a strong Featured Image.** The image fills most of the popup, so a clear, eye catching photo of the prize makes a big difference.
* **Consider a bundle.** A competition with the **Bundles** promotion shows "Buy X get Y Free!" offers in the popup, which can be very persuasive.
* **Review it now and then.** When your upsell competition ends or sells out, the next eligible one takes its place automatically. Check from time to time that the competition being offered is still the one you want.

{% hint style="success" %}
Want to test it yourself? Open your site in a private or incognito browser window, sign in, add a different competition to your basket, and go to checkout. The popup should appear a moment after the page loads.
