# How Discounts Combine

How coupon codes, competition promotions and quantity discounts work together on Rafflex, and which ones a customer can use at the same time.

**Short answer:** a customer can use **one** coupon code per order, and a coupon replaces any automatic quantity discount rather than adding to it. Free bonus tickets from a **Buy One Get One Free** or **Bundles** promotion are different: they are not money off, so a customer can get them and use a coupon on the same order.

This page explains each combination, so you can set your offers up with confidence and answer the occasional "where did my discount go?" question from a customer.

### The types of offer

1. **Coupon codes.** A code your customer types in at checkout, for example `SAVE10`, which takes a percentage or a fixed amount off the order. You create these yourself. See [Promos and Discounts](/marketing/website-tools/promos-and-discounts.md).
2. **Competition promotions.** A **Buy One Get One Free** or **Bundles** offer set on an individual competition, which gives away free bonus tickets. You set these on the competition form. See [Promos and Discounts](/marketing/website-tools/promos-and-discounts.md).
3. **Automatic quantity discounts.** If Rafflex has set up quantity discounts for your site, a percentage comes off a competition's tickets automatically once a customer adds a certain number of them (for example 10% off when they add 20 or more). The customer does not type anything. The saving appears next to that competition in the basket and updates as they change the quantity. There is no screen for them in your admin panel, so if you would like them set up, changed or removed, contact Rafflex support.

### How they work together

| Combination                       | Can a customer have both? | What happens                                                                                     |
| --------------------------------- | ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Two coupon codes | No | Only one code per order. If a second code is accepted, it replaces the first. |
| Coupon code and promotion | **Yes** | The customer gets their free bonus tickets and the coupon takes money off the order total. |
| Coupon code and quantity discount | No | The coupon replaces the quantity discount. |
| Promotion and quantity discount | Not intended | A competition running a promotion is added to the basket without a quantity discount. See below. |

#### One coupon per order

A customer cannot enter two codes and get both discounts. When a code is accepted, any code already on the order is removed and the new one takes its place. If the new code is refused, the original code stays on the order.

#### Coupons work alongside promotions

A promotion gives free tickets, and a coupon takes money off what the customer pays. They do not cancel each other out, so a customer buying a **Buy One Get One Free** competition can also use your coupon code on the same order.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Do not want coupons used on promoted competitions?** Edit the coupon and add those competitions to its **Exclude products** list. If the basket contains any of them, the code is refused and the customer is told which competition to remove. You will find **Exclude products** in the **Competition Limiting** section of the coupon form.
{% endhint %}

#### A coupon replaces a quantity discount

This only applies if quantity discounts have been set up for your site, and it is the moment that confuses customers most.

If a customer already has a quantity discount showing in their basket and then enters a coupon code, the quantity discount is cleared and the coupon takes its place. They get the coupon discount **instead of**, not **as well as**, the quantity discount.

While a coupon stays on the order, the quantity discount does not come back, even if the customer changes their ticket quantity. If the customer removes the coupon (using the small cross next to it in the checkout totals), the quantity discount is worked out again for the tickets in their basket.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Because a coupon **replaces** a quantity discount rather than adding to it, a less generous code can leave a customer worse off than using no code at all. If your site has quantity discounts, make sure any coupon you promote is at least as generous.
{% endhint %}

#### Promotions and quantity discounts

Quantity discounts are meant for competitions without a promotion. When a customer adds a competition with a **Buy One Get One Free** or **Bundles** promotion to their basket, no quantity discount is applied to it, because the free tickets are the offer for that competition.

If you ever spot a quantity discount showing against a promoted competition in a customer's basket, contact Rafflex support so it can be looked into.

### What this means for you

* A customer can **never** use two coupon codes on one order.
* A customer **can** get free bonus tickets from a promotion and use a coupon on the same order. Use **Exclude products** on the coupon if you want to prevent this.
* A coupon always **replaces** a quantity discount. The two never add together.
* If you run a site wide code while quantity discounts are active, expect the odd question about a "disappearing" discount. The honest answer is that the coupon took its place.

{% hint style="success" %}
You do not need to do anything to stop two coupons or a coupon and a quantity discount being combined. Rafflex handles this automatically. Your job is to price your coupons sensibly, and to use **Exclude products** wherever you do not want a code used alongside a promotion.
