Why Discounts Do Not Stack

How coupon codes, quantity discounts and competition promotions interact in RaffleX, and why a customer only ever gets one discount at a time.

Short answer: no. A customer only ever benefits from one discount at a time. RaffleX will never add two discounts together on the same basket. Instead, it works out the single best discount that applies and shows that one. This page explains why, so you can set your offers up with confidence and answer the occasional "where did my discount go?" question from a customer.

The three types of discount

Most operators think in terms of the two discounts covered on the Promos and Discounts page. There is actually a third:

  1. Coupon codes. A site-wide code your customer types into the basket (for example SAVE10). See Promos and Discounts.

  2. Competition promotions. A Buy One Get One Free or Bundle offer set on an individual competition, which gives away free tickets. See Promos and Discounts.

  3. Automatic quantity discounts. A percentage off that switches on automatically once a customer adds a certain number of tickets (for example 10% off once they reach 20 tickets). The customer does not type anything. The saving simply appears in the basket and recalculates as they change the quantity.

How they interact

These three never combine. The order of precedence is what decides which one a customer sees.

Competition promotions beat automatic quantity discounts

If a competition has a Buy One Get One Free or Bundle promotion set on it, the automatic quantity discount is never applied to that competition. The free-ticket promotion takes over instead.

In practice this means you cannot run a Bundle offer and an automatic percentage-off quantity discount on the same competition at the same time. The promotion wins. There is nothing to configure here, it simply works this way.

A coupon code replaces an automatic quantity discount

This is the moment that confuses customers most.

If a customer already has an automatic quantity discount showing in their basket and then enters a coupon code, the automatic discount is cleared and the coupon takes its place. They get the coupon discount instead of, not as well as, the quantity discount.

So a customer who was already saving 10% automatically might enter a code and watch that 10% disappear, replaced by whatever the code gives them. While a coupon stays on the basket, the automatic quantity discount will not come back, even if the customer changes their ticket quantity. The coupon stays in control until it is removed.

What this means for you

  • A customer can never combine a coupon code with an automatic quantity discount. They get whichever single discount applies.

  • A customer can never get a coupon or quantity discount stacked on top of a Buy One Get One Free or Bundle. Free-ticket promotions and the automatic quantity discount are mutually exclusive on the same competition.

  • If you run overlapping offers (for example a site-wide code during a period when quantity discounts are also active), expect the occasional support question about a "disappearing" discount. The honest answer is that discounts do not stack: the most recently applied one, the coupon, takes over.
