# Scratch Card

A digital scratch card. Customers scratch away the surface to reveal all of their ticket numbers and any prizes underneath.

***

### What Is It?

A digital scratch card that mimics the real thing. After checking out, customers scratch off a single panel to uncover every ticket in their order at once, and see straight away whether any of them have won.

In the **Game Type** dropdown, this game is called **Scratch Card**.

{% hint style="info" %}
Like every game type, Scratch Card only appears once the competition has at least one [instant win prize](/create-your-first-raffle/add-instant-wins.md). Without one, customers simply see their ticket numbers.
{% endhint %}

***

### How It Works

1. After checking out, the customer lands on their order confirmation page and sees a scratch card headed **Scratch Off!**.
2. On a **phone or tablet**, they scratch with their finger. On a **computer**, they click and drag with the mouse.
3. As they scratch, a **Scratching Progress** bar shows how much of the card they have cleared.
4. Underneath the surface is a grid of all their ticket numbers, in number order. **Winning tickets** are highlighted in your site's colours with the prize name. Every other ticket shows **No Win**.
5. Once most of the card has been scratched, a result pops up. Winners see **Winner!** with how many prizes they have won, and a win sound plays. Otherwise the message reads **No Win** and "Better luck next time".
6. A few seconds later, a summary appears (winners can press **View Details** on the result to see it straight away). Winners see **Congratulations!** with a list of each winning ticket number and its prize. Everyone else sees **Game Complete**. Customers can press **Close** to look at the card again.

{% hint style="info" %}
Customers who would rather not scratch can press **Skip & Reveal** to clear the whole card in one go and jump straight to the summary.

### Setting It Up

1. In the **admin panel**, find the **Competitions** group in the left-hand menu and click **Competitions**.
2. Click **Edit** on the competition you want to use (or click **New Competition** to start a fresh one).
3. In the right-hand column, open the **Game Type** dropdown and choose **Scratch Card**.
4. A panel called **Scratch Card Settings** appears underneath. You can leave it empty to use the default design, or upload your own overlay (see below).
5. Click **Save changes** (or **Create** on a new competition).
6. Make sure the competition has at least one instant win. See [Add Instant Wins](/create-your-first-raffle/add-instant-wins.md).

### Customisation Options

The scratch card works straight away with a built-in design, so no extra setup is needed. If you want to brand it, there is one option in the **Scratch Card Settings** panel.

#### Scratch Card Overlay Image

This is the surface customers scratch away to reveal their tickets. Use it to add your logo, your brand colours, or a design that matches the competition's theme.

|                     |                                                        |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Required?** | No. The default overlay is used if you leave it empty. |
| **File types** | PNG, JPEG (or JPG), or WebP. |
| **Max file size**   | 2MB.                                                   |
| **How it is shown** | Stretched to cover the whole scratch area. |

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Choose an image that still looks good when stretched.** The scratch area gets taller as a customer buys more tickets, because there are more numbers to fit underneath. On a phone the tickets sit three to a row, so a big order makes a very tall card. Your overlay is stretched to fill whatever shape the card ends up, so:

* **Patterns, textures and gradients work best.** They look fine at any shape.
* **Avoid circles, faces and detailed logos.** These can look squashed or stretched on very small or very large orders.
* **Keep any text short and bold**, and check it in the preview on both the desktop and mobile views.
  {% endhint %}

***

### Tips

* **Make the overlay clearly "scratchable".** A metallic or silver style finish tells customers straight away what to do.
* **Pick colours that contrast with your site.** Winning tickets underneath are highlighted in your site's **Primary Color** (see [Choose Site Colours](/customise-your-site/choose-site-colours.md)), so the reveal feels more exciting if the overlay looks different.
* **Keep the file small.** A smaller image loads faster on the confirmation page, especially on mobile data.

### Want to try it first?

Once the competition has been saved, a **Preview Game** button appears just under the **Game Type** dropdown. Click it to open the **Game Preview** page, where you can play the Scratch Card with your own overlay before any customer sees it.

* The **Game Settings** panel on the left holds the same **Scratch Card Settings** described above. Any change you make, including a new upload, shows in the preview straight away.
* The **Live Preview** on the right plays the game with a few sample tickets, some of them winners. Nothing is entered and no one is charged.
* Use the desktop and mobile buttons above the preview to see both layouts, and the circular arrow to replay the game.
* Click **Save** when you are happy. Your changes are not applied to the competition until you do. Click **Back to competition** to return to the edit page.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The preview page has its own **Game Type** dropdown, so you can compare different games. If you change it and then click **Save**, the competition's game type changes too. A message under the page title warns you when this will happen.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
The preview uses your real instant win prizes, so it is most useful once you have added them. If the competition has no instant wins yet, it shows some example prizes instead so you can still check the look.
